The point is simple. A grab bar carries body weight, sometimes suddenly and at an awkward angle. It is only as sound as what it is anchored into, and drywall anchors are not adequate for that job regardless of what the packaging claims.

Where the decision actually gets made

The constraint is timing. Reinforcement is installed behind the wall surface, which means the decision is effectively made when the wall is closed — frequently months or years before anyone thinks about a grab bar.

"People renovate a bathroom at sixty and install grab bars at seventy-five," said Zachary Tye Wennstedt, founder of Aging Safely Baths. "The cheap moment to make that possible was at sixty, while the wall was open. It costs almost nothing then."

What to specify during a renovation

• Continuous blocking rather than blocking at specific planned positions, since the position that suits a person later is not always the position planned now.
• Blocking at the shower or tub entry, where the transition happens.
• Blocking beside the toilet, at seated transfer height.
• Blocking along the back wall of a shower or tub.
• A written record of where blocking was installed. This sounds trivial and saves a great deal of guesswork years later.

If the wall is already closed

Options remain, though each has a tradeoff:

• Stud-mounted bars can be anchored where studs actually fall, which may not be where the bar is most useful.
• Surface-mounted backing plates spread load across a wider area and are visible.
• Floor-to-ceiling poles require no wall anchoring and suit some situations well.
• Opening the wall remains the option that produces the best result.

The company notes that suction-mounted bars are not a substitute for any of the above and should not be relied on for weight bearing.
