Most small business sites are slow for a small number of predictable reasons, and none of them require a rebuild to diagnose.

Denver Web Design has published guidance on site speed for small business websites, covering the causes that account for most slow-loading pages.

The usual causes

• Oversized images. A photograph uploaded straight from a phone can be several megabytes. Resized and compressed properly it is a fraction of that, with no visible difference.
• Accumulated plugins. Each one adds requests. Many are no longer used.
• Third-party scripts. Chat widgets, analytics, tracking pixels and embeds all load from elsewhere, and a slow one holds up the page.
• Unoptimized fonts. Loading many weights of several typefaces costs more than most sites realize.
• No caching. Rebuilding an unchanged page on every visit is wasted work.

Why it matters commercially

The firm notes that site speed affects both how many visitors stay and how search systems assess the page — but that the first of those is the one that shows up in revenue.
